The Reading Buccaneers are a Drum & Bugle Corps for all ages. In the simplest terms, it's like a marching band with only brass instruments, drumline, and pit. Oh, I should also mention that they're a member of DCA---Drum Corps Associates, which is one step below DCI---Drum Corps International. DCI is like the professional level of marching band. It's the best thing in the entire world. No amount of exclamation points would suffice to explain how AMAZING DCI is...
Here's a video of the beginning of the show "Spartacus" by the group Phantom Regiment, they won this year: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bg6tqrpMnm8
SO ANYWAY.
Last night was the Reading Buccaneer's Spring Preview. We picked up Shep and then my dad dropped us off at DK's house---his parents gave us a ride there.
Haha, so we're in the car (I LOVE their car!) and we had a lot of funny moments, let's see here...
- FOR SALE!!!
- Ooh look there's goats...you have got to be KIDDING me! ;D Took me awhile to get that one...Shep had to explain it to me...
- DK'S DAD DRIVES LIKE A MANIAC. I FEARED FOR MY LIFE MORE THAN TWICE DURING THAT CAR RIDE.
- Bluegrass Boogie station...*shudder*
- I like it better when DK's mom drives... ;D
- Oh, haha!! So we're listening to the radio and this song by Paul Colman comes on, it's called, "If I Were Jesus" or something like that, and the first two lines of the song were, "If I were Jesus, I'd have real long hair." OMWORD ME AND SHEP STARTING CRACKING UP!!!! It was hiLARIOUS.
- The little knobby things on the coat hangers OPEN.
Good times...wow, ok, the car ride ALONE was fun!
So we got there and were pulling into the parking lot when we saw Asian, Mattman, and James coming up the stairs on one side of the lot. DK's dad dropped us off at the front, we bought our tickets, then found the group. I got a T-shirt. :]
We started to head into the auditorium (it was inside, no marching, just playing), and we heard the Alumni Reading Buccaneers group. THE FIRST TRUMPET PLAYER WAS...PHENOMENAL. Those high notes...WOW. I LOVE them! It's just one of those things that every single time I hear it...I have absolutely no idea how to describe it so I'm just gonna stop trying now. :P
The auditorium was PACKED, so we ended up sitting like four rows back from the front on the very left side.
It started at about 7, but the Reading Buccaneers weren't on until 10---they had a lot of other groups go before them. They were all AMAZING. Like REALLY good!! The trumpets...OMWord...it's official now, the trumpet is THE BEST INSTRUMENT. Well, if it's played well. ;D But I also like the sound of the mellophone...hmm...
There was a group from New York City!!! They were so FUNNY!!! The soloist were these two older men (we decided they were 58 years old... ;D) and they were so good!! During a percussion feature they hopped off the stage and came and sat in the audience, it was great. :D
Haha!! So I decided to text James during one of the performances (he was sitting two seats away from me). The funny thing was that he didn't have my number, so he had no idea who it was. So he asked what I was doing and I said I was watching an amazing group from New York City and he was like, "...you're in New York City?" Silly James...that boy makes me laugh. ;D
THEN IT WAS TIME FOR THE READING BUCCANEERS TO PERFORM. AHHHHH!!!!!! I could not WAIT.
So we're sitting there and we're watching the pit set up in front of the first row (you know how's there's space between the stage and the front row? The pit was in that space, there was a LOT of them), and then the drumline was on stage, and we're like...where's the brass? Cause all of the other performers had just been all on stage with the drumline in the back and brass up front.
I leaned over to Shep and said, "I bet the brass are gonna be in the aisle," and I pointed to the aisle that was right next to us. "I want the first trumpets right there..." He just laughed.
Well...not two minutes later, THE TUBAS STARTED WALKING DOWN THE AISLE!!!
I was like, "WOO HOO!!!!!!" Shep said, "Well, tubas are kinda the opposite of trumpets..." but then the tubas kept on walking right past us!! So the line goes by, I see DK, scream out his name ALAP (as loudly as possible), and then...A MIRACLE HAPPENED. THE FIRST TRUMPETS STOPPED RIGHT NEXT TO ME. I WAS IN HEAVEN. THEY WERE LITERALLY 4 FEET AWAY FROM ME. AHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was like hyperventilating, Shep had to restrain me, I was SO excited!! I was like, "I SO TOTALLY CALLED THIS!!!" I am THE luckiest person alive...I was within four feet of the first trumpet players from the Reading Buccaneers and some of them were CUTE.
So after I got done doing most of my freaking out over the fact that THEY WERE RIGHT THERE, I glanced over to find DK. He looked so professional!! IT WAS SO COOL. He looked AMAZING. Haha, he was like a giant compared to the other girls that play mello with him. ;D He was so tall!!
THEN...THE SHOW STARTED.
I am just gonna have a moment of silence here for the sheer EPICNESS and AWESOMNESS and BEYAWESOMNESS and INCREDIBLENESS and WONDERFULNESS and MIND-BLOWINGNESS and MARVELOUSNESS and AMAZINGNESS of the show.
...
They were RIGHT THERE...RIGHT THERE. I HAVE A NEW PERMANENT HAPPY PLACE.
DK looked so cool...and the drumline was SOOOOO AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! The tenor solo...WOO!!! OMWORD...those guys were HOT. Not meaning by how they looked, by how they PLAYED.
Throughout the entire performance I was SCREAMING MY LITTLE HEAD OFF...I'm surprised I still have my voice today (it must be all the training at Six Flags :D).
It ended and DK passed us to leave and I shrieked out his name again. He turned and had this little smirk on his face, it was so funny!!
Then Asian and Mattman and James had to leave cause Mattman had recently gotten his license and he can't drive after 11.
OH! ALMOST FORGOT!! The clock in the wall said that it was 8:05 the entire night and IT WAS CROOKED. :P
Me and Shep went and found DK's parents, used the restroom (WHY IS THE LINE FOR THE GIRL'S BATHROOM ALWAYS SO LONG??????? AGHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), and then waited outside the auditorium for DK.
So he came out, and then went to the gym to get all of his stuff or something. Haha! When he came back I gave him a HUGE hug!!! I don't even know if you could consider it a hug, it was more like a SMACK. I just ran and then SMACKED right into him!!! ;D
HIS SUNGLASSES ARE SO COOL!!!!!!!!!!! I WANT THEM. I was wearing sunglasses at 11 at night...I worry myself...
OMWORD I WAS SO HYPER LAST NIGHT. I just had SO much energy and the show was SO AMAZING and it was just....AHHH!!!!!!! A very good night. :]
THEN WE WENT TO SONIC!! I'VE NEVER BEEN THERE BEFORE!! YOU STAYED IN THE CAR TO EAT AND THEY BROUGHT FOOD TO YOU!!!!!!!! IT WAS SO COOL!!!!!!!! IT WAS LIKE OLD FASHIONED!!!!!!!!!!! IT WAS SWEET!!!!
I got a vanilla ice cream cone. :D
Ooh, and I stole some of DK's whatever something strawberry thing he had. THAT was yummy!!
OMWORD SHEP. I was leaning forward looking at something in the car and he TOUCHED MY BACK. I FREAKED OUT. I ALMOST DIED. Turns out he was trying to find a certain school listed on the back of my MB shirt, but he TOUCHED my back...*shudder*
Then DK's parents drove us home. The car ride was fun, I was not tired AT ALL. Hehe!! We were listening to recordings Shep had made of the show and the music would sound all fuzzy, then all of a sudden you'd hear the first trumpet go into the STRATOSPHERE and then all you could hear after that was me screaming my head off...GOOD TIMES...haha!!! I almost forgot! When we were at Sonic, DK's mom asked what Dr. Park's (aka Asian...that's what I call him) first name was and Shep and DK say, "Dennis" and the same time that I say, "Asian". I WASN'T EVEN THINKING!!! It just kinda came out... :P It was REALLY funny though.
The only bad thing about the car ride was that I was dropped off first... :''''(
So I got home, sprinted into the house, attacked my dad in a huge bear hug, and then told (well...more like screamed) him about how AMAZING the night was.
Haha!!! So this morning I was upstairs brushing my teeth when I hear my dad shrieking and squawking and squeaking and screaming and I yelled downstairs, "What are you DOING??" And he yelled back, "Impersonating what you sounded like last night!!! Would you like to come down here and show your mom what you were like?" So I laughed, finished brushing my teeth real quick, and then ran downstairs and ranted for about 10 minutes (in my screaming-OMWORD-I'm-excited-last-night-was-the-best-night-EVA voice).
IT WAS THE BEST NIGHT EVER...nothing has ever compared to that...
I am IN LOVE with the Reading Buccaneers... :]
